White Ibis Preening (St. Petersburg)
Wood Stork (Ft. De Soto Park, St. Petersburg) The only stork that breeds in North America. Due to precipitous declines in their numbers, these birds have been listed as endangered under the ESA since 1984. The recent Fish and Wildlife 5-year Status Review indicates that Wood Storks have expanded their breeding range northward and recommends its federal status be upgraded to Threatened. Some experts feel such an upgrade would be premature, since the stork colonies are very sensitive to drought conditions.
